Happy anniversary to my darling husband who does not read this blog.

I've had that corny Shania Twain song running through my head all weekend:

Looks like we made it.
Look how far we've come my baby.
We mighta took the long way
We knew we'd get there someday.

They said,
"I bet
They'll never make it"
But just look at us holding on
We're still together
still going strong

Is there any couple who doesn't believe that they've overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles to be together? Still, I can't help but feel that our obstacles were EXTRA insurmountable -- prejudice from my parents, prejudice from his parents, cross-country move for graduate schools, different religious backgrounds and beliefs, different cultural backgrounds, etc etc etc.

(Let's just forget that Shania just broke up with her husband, music producer Mutt Lange, to whom she dedicated this song.)

I'm a pretty superstitious person, so it pains me to say this, but I'll just go ahead and do it: This has been the easiest year of our relationship thus far. I have not regretted getting married for one second. This, in spite of my grad-school-related angst and depression. Pretty amazing, huh?

I'm so lucky.

My brother's engagement party was this weekend, so the whole clan got together and celebrated at the familial home base in Jamaica, Queens. Somewhat to my chagrin, my family also took the opportunity to throw me and MH a little pre-engagement-party party, to commemorate our first year of marriage. My family is incredibly sweet, and I miss them to pieces.

Anniversary cake.

Us and cake.

The ceremonial putting on of the engagement ring.

Thanks! Yeah, it was a happy day all around!

(Also, I am wearing blusher, which apparently does wonders for me :)

Happy Anniversary! I think you should blast "This is why I'm hot" every year on your anniversary. :)

Heh, you are totally right. I can't believe none of my relatives reminded me of that this weekend! (Maybe they want to erase the memory -- most of them were a lot more scandalized than I was.)

You look so lovely.

I only feel we've overcome obstacles when I stop and think about it...

Thank you!

You and J are sweethearts from your teen years, no? I would think that that has had its share of challenges (and sweetnesses, too - I have always been a little jealous of couples who've known each other that long!)

Yes, but only just - I was 19 and he was 18 when we met. Though that's never seemed all that young to me, since my parents were a couple from age 16/18, and my grandmother's first date with my grandfather was when she was 14 and he was 16.

So we've been together nearly ten years, even though we've only been married for two.

I must say that getting together so early does have one major disadvantage - you're unlikely to know what you'll end up doing or where you'll live. J and I spent several periods doing the long-distance-relationship thing, which wasn't much fun (and then when you get back together, there's that awful period of anxiety while you wait to find out whether you still like each other that way!)

Worth it in the end, though.
